CANDLE holder WORKSHOP

IN collaboration with  Pietra Galli and Mafalda Costa

Handbuilding Pottery Workshop at Goodmood Pottery — Camberwell, South London

Join us at our Camberwell pottery studio for a 3-hour handbuilding workshop, where you'll shape clay by hand and craft your very own ceramic candle holder to take home.

Drawing inspiration from Embracing, a collaboration between Pietra Galli and Mafalda Costa, this pottery class invites you to explore the beauty of natural and floral forms through a variety of handbuilding techniques. You'll learn how to shape, build, and decorate clay from scratch, creating a piece that's both sculptural and functional.

Whether you're picking up clay for the first time or looking to refine your skills, our pottery workshops in South London are open to all levels — a relaxed, hands-on introduction to the craft of handbuilding.

Looking for pottery classes in Camberwell or a creative pottery workshop in South London? Goodmood Pottery offers small-group ceramics classes just minutes from Peckham, Brixton, and Dulwich — the perfect space to learn, create, and unwind.

  •   Welcome & Introduction

We begin with a short introduction to the history and philosophy of Kintsugi — the Japanese concept of finding beauty in imperfection. You’ll learn about the practice’s roots in wabi-sabi and we’ll walk through each step of the workshop so you know exactly what to expect.

      Choose & Break

If you’ve brought a cherished ceramic piece from home, this is where you’ll prepare it for its golden transformation. Otherwise, you’ll browse our collection and choose the one that speaks to you. Then comes the thrilling part — you’ll take turns breaking your chosen piece with a hammer. It’s surprisingly liberating!

      Live Demonstration

Before you dive in, your tutor will give a hands-on demonstration showing you how to get started with the gold-infused epoxy, how to align your broken pieces, and the best techniques for creating beautiful, clean golden seams.

      Repair & Create

Now it’s your turn! Carefully piece your ceramic back together, using the gold epoxy to bond every fracture. Take your time, enjoy the meditative process, and watch as your broken piece transforms into something uniquely beautiful. One-to-one guidance is available throughout.

  • Our friendly, experienced instructors will be right there with you, offering personal guidance and helpful tips to help you create your very first kintsugi piece.

  • We take care of everything for you, from clay and tools to aprons. Just show up and start creating, with no extra costs.

  • Studio Access & Clean-Up

We kindly ask everyone to arrive on time so we can make the most of our session together. To help keep the studio running smoothly, please begin tidying up 15 minutes before the end of the session; this includes labeling and storing your work, cleaning tools, and wiping down your workspace with a sponge and water. These steps reflect standard ceramic studio practice and COSHH guidelines, and we really appreciate your cooperation.

    The Ceramics Process

    · Make your pieces

    · Allow work to dry (1 week to refine; 2–4 weeks before firing depending on size)

    · Return to trim, fettle, and optionally decorate

    · Dry fully before first firing (3+ weeks)

    · Return to glaze

    · Final firing and collection (approx. 3+ week turnaround)

    Clay Allowance

Clay is included for workshop participants. There may be additonal charges per KG for clay if using large amounts. Open Access users and Members must buy their own clay. Acceptance of Terms By booking any class, workshop, event, or voucher, you agree to these terms and conditions.

    Class Validity

Open Access passes and vouchers are valid for 6 months from purchase. Date-specific classes are valid only for the booked date unless rescheduled within 2 months. All bookings are non-refundable and non-transferable unless stated otherwise.

    Rescheduling

To help us manage bookings fairly, courses and half-day tasters require one month’s notice for a refund. Thank you for your understanding—these guidelines help us offer a great experience for everyone.

    Storage of Work

To help us look after everyone’s pieces, unfired work is stored for up to two weeks and must be clearly labelled. Bisque-fired and finished work is stored for 4–6 weeks. Any work that is unlabelled or not collected within these timeframes may be recycled to make space for others. Thank you for your understanding—unfortunately, refunds cannot be offered for recycled work

    Finished Work

All pieces go through two firings before they’re complete, which helps ensure the best results. For this reason, finished work won’t be ready to take home after your first session—but we promise it will be worth the wait! Thank you for your understanding—unfortunately, refunds cannot be offered for recycled work.

    Firings & Equipment

Estimated turnaround is 3 weeks per firing. Delays may occur. Over-glazed or excessively thick work will not be fired.

    Health, Safety & Liability

Your safety is important to us, and we ask everyone to follow COSHH and studio guidelines to help keep the space safe and enjoyable for all. Goodmood cannot accept responsibility for injuries that result from not following these guidelines, and students may be liable for damage caused by misuse of equipment or materials. As part of the ceramic process, breakages, glaze variations, and kiln-related incidents can occasionally occur, and refunds cannot be offered in these cases. Thank you for your understanding and care in the studio.

    COSHH Guidelines

Silica and ceramic materials can be hazardous when airborne. Follow all studio safety rules, clean using water only, avoid dry sanding or sweeping, and wear appropriate PPE when required. Ask staff if unsure at any time.

tutor

Sarah Adardour is a London-based artist and the founder of Atelier Frenchie, whose work is deeply rooted in both cultural richness and emotional depth. Born in Morocco and raised in Paris, she brings a unique, global perspective to her practice, blending sculptural techniques with the meditative philosophy of Kintsugi—the Japanese art of repairing broken objects with gold.

At the heart of Sarah’s teaching is a belief in art as a powerful tool for connection and healing. Her workshops go beyond simply learning a craft; they offer a reflective space where participants are encouraged to embrace imperfection, explore resilience, and find beauty in what has been broken. Through the careful, intentional process of repair, she invites people to slow down and reconnect with both materials and themselves.

Outside of her studio practice, Sarah is a passionate Community Lead and Art Facilitator. She works closely with organisations such as The Bridge and the 999 Club, helping to make creative expression accessible to diverse communities. Whether guiding beginners or experienced makers, her approach is warm, inclusive, and purpose-driven—transforming each workshop into a meaningful, shared experience of restoration and creativity.
